Sparrow Artspace provides monthly residencies where artists can create, collaborate, and exhibit to further their artistic journey in a supportive community.
Exhibition Title / Artists Immersive Art and Hanfu
Exhibition Dates Sept 1 – Sept 29
Exhibition Description Yu Chen and Noah Haruki present work rooted in their Chinese and Japanese culture in their September residency. Drop in for a visit during Art Walk to meet the artists! Yu Chen grew up in China and now lives in Calgary and specializes in oil painting. She was professionally trained for over a decade broadly in China and the US and experienced in a wide variety of media and techniques. Inspired by Western-style painting and Eastern culture, her recent series of works “Meditation” and “Hanfu Beauty” reveal her self-exploration for cultural identity. Her focus on the western realistic style of painting and interesting choice of subject matter presents a unique perspective of Asian culture.
Noah Haruki, a third-generation Japanese-Canadian, seeks to connect with his heritage through painting and ceramic art. Using traditional mediums and techniques, Noah creates works with a strong sense of classical Japanese aesthetics.
Photographer Tina Han is also participating in the residency as we invite you to come to Sparrow Artspace to try on Hanfu garments and have your photo taken. (Sept 25th
