The New GalleryEau Claire Market, 200 Barclay Parade SW Ted Hiebert's work explores the relationship between darkness and the imagination, mobilizing the codes of photographic representation for their material, psychological and delusional possibilities. While photography is often referred to as a "writing with light" -- a vision-based illumination of image -- there is an equally powerful, though less commonly articulated inverse side to photography, namely a debt to darkness -- both with the light-tight shell of the camera, and the light-deprived experience of darkroom processing. Here, it is precisely not the sense of vision that governs, but touch -- as film is developed in the night-time blind of tactile awareness -- metaphor for the material skins of living itself. And here, in the codes of darkness and touch, an inverse side of photographic practice is exposed. |

POST exhibitArt Loop, Lower Level Art Central Calgary Artist:
Nikki Gour Gour's sculptures, glass work and paintings represent manufactured objects as carriers of important information, ideas and emotions that we all relate to based on our personal interactions with them. Although most of these objects were created for a utilitarian purpose, we interact with them indifferently based on our previous experiences. When confronted with these objects in new unfamiliar ways w start to question the very nature of the object and its meaning or purpose to ones self.
