Ted Hiebert's work explores the relationship between darkness and the imagination, mobilizing the codes of photographic representation for their material, psychological and delusional possibilities. While photography is often referred to as a "writing with light" -- a vision-based illumination of image -- there is an equally powerful, though less commonly articulated inverse side to photography, namely a debt to darkness -- both with the light-tight shell of the camera, and the light-deprived experience of darkroom processing. Here, it is precisely not the sense of vision that governs, but touch -- as film is developed in the night-time blind of tactile awareness -- metaphor for the material skins of living itself. And here, in the codes of darkness and touch, an inverse side of photographic practice is exposed.

Calgary Artist: Nikki Gour
September 3 - 24, 2009.

Gour's sculptures, glass work and paintings represent manufactured objects as carriers of important information, ideas and emotions that we all relate to based on our personal interactions with them. Although most of these objects were created for a utilitarian purpose, we interact with them indifferently based on our previous experiences. When confronted with these objects in new unfamiliar ways w start to question the very nature of the object and its meaning or purpose to ones self.

FRANCE JODOIN: TIMELESS
France Jodoin's ambitious and passionate paintings are inspired by her own manifestation of time and space, and embody a mythical representation of the tumultuous seas and skies. With her whimsically painted seascape series formed from memory and reflection, Jodoin's textural oil paintings portray an abstract expressionist quality that brings movement, energy, and life to the canvas. The exhibition, entitled "Timeless" will feature a new collection of Jodoin's deeply impastoed oil seascapes that reference ships, coastal birds, and architecture.

PREVIEW - SURVEYING JUDY CHICAGO: 1968 - 2008 (opening September 26)
