Edmonton artist Kyla Fischer's practice is inspired by personal experiences in nature, and focuses on themes concerning the transience of life and human existence. The work featured in this exhibition is inspired by a poem written in the 11th Century by the Chinese poet, Su Tung-Po. The poem stimulates self-reflection through its descriptive language and written format. An image of sublime nature is presented in two verses, the second being a sort of mirror image of the first, causing one to reflect on the cyclical nature of our existence. The prints in this exhibition are created in response to the lyrical language of the text; the colours, forms, and atmosphere of the printed imagery directly drawn from the poem itself.

"Origin Returning" is on display in the Artist Proof Gallery from September 7 to October 15, 2011, with an opening reception on Friday, September 9th from 6:30 to 8:30pm. Admission is free and all are welcome! For more information please visit www.albertaprintmakers.ca.

Other times, sharp and focused with more detail.

Audrey Mabee: Forgotten Friends
September 15 - October 7, 2011

"I don't consciously make changes in the way I paint, but through my painting process changes just evolve and happen."

For over twenty years, Audrey Mabee's paintings have delighted collectors and will continue to do so with her new series, Snapshots of Forgotten Friends

In this series the work is more neutral, more toned down; each painting boasting "one splash of poison" as Mabee describes the colour surprise that jars the eye away from the subtle spell cast by the works' quiet hues.

"Snapshots of Forgotten Friends" recalls the sometimes confused, sometimes warm feelings that most of us experience when we find a box of old snapshots and try to remember who those people are or were.

Gallery nOne is a point of departure. In terms of Art creation and exhibition, it is a space that serves no one thing and no one person. Primarily a studio and exhibition space for photographs and paintings, gallery nOne serves as a nexus between artists and art of all kinds.
Matthew Spidell and David Grudniski are Gallery nOne's featured artists for Artwalk 2011.

Matthew draws inspiration for his photographs from the physical and metaphysical beauty of people and place. His career spans 30 years, 23 of which have involved medical/forensic photography. Working collaboratively with Grudniski on "The Project" provides him the opportunity to creatively explore the portrait, fashion and figure genres.

The objective of "The Project" is to produce photographs and paintings that convey the beauty of Being, and the female form.

David's current series of large oil paintings and portraits is inspired by the portrait, fashion and figure photography sessions that are part of "The Project" with Spidell. David's work has had a long gestation and is the result of his many years as a painter. He is passionate when he says, "These paintings reflect my true passion for portraiture and the figure."

New paintings by acclaimed Montreal artist Sylvain Roberge.
A passionate, intense, and determined artist, Roberge's appeal lies in his intuitive approach to creation. His works, through their style, speed of execution, and technical mastery, evoke the artist's high energy and meticulousness. The diversity of techniques used shows that Roberge constantly pushes the limits of his work and seeks to innovate. In a never-ending quest for new emotions, he devotes his life to his art.

Saskatchewan Vistas: Kimberly Kiel
From Balgonie SK, Kimberly has painted a series of breathtaking Saskatchewan landscapes

Sabine Maitre: Glass and Steel Dimensions
In 2005 Sabine started creating her unique steel and glass sculptures. Sabine establishes an intimate and emotional dialogue between natural and man-made elements. Mankind, whose quest for absolutes creates ever fascinating structures on Earth of which his passage might only be temporary. But the message reverberates and the hierarchical and sober forms of Sabine's sculptures leave us questing for more.

There has never been a shortage of representations of the female form but the male counterpart has sadly been lacking. Our show goes out in search of the ever elusive dong. We've painted it. We've drawn it. We've photographed it. And we've even sculpted it in stainless steel. Our show is a celebration of the penis in all its guises.

ECOSYSTEMS; a group exhibition project by Verna Vogel
This group exhibition combines the work of 12 contemporary visual artists who live and work in Alberta. Together we explore ideas of natural landscape and urban environment. Cities first grow upon a foundation of natural landscape. They evolve and eventually deteriorate, becoming in their turn foundations for newly evolving natural landscapes. More time passes, another city is built over that landscape, and another landscape eventually grows over that city.

A DEVICE TO ASSIST IN THE DIVINATION OF INCIDENCE By Steven Cottingham
The Device for Assisted Stochastomancy, or, the Device to Assist in the Divination of Indicence provides a universal venue for divination. The presence of a viewer, sensed by an array of digital multimeters, is translated into pure data and reinterpreted as apophenic text. The resulting fragments of language act as a medium more readily accessible to the viewer; granting one admittance into the realm of the clairvoyant.

Christine Klassen - Director

The Weiss Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new figurative paintings by Montreal-based painter Daniel Barkley. This show will mark his second exhibition in Western Canada.

Daniel Barkley's painting is perhaps most revered for his particularly rich handling of paint and his exquisite rendering of the form. His paintings evoke an unexpected curiosity, unselfconsciously exploring human experience.

Graduating with both a BFA and MFA from Concordia University, Barkley originally focused his studies in film production. After working in the film industry for a number of years Barkley decided to go back to painting - a talent he had honed in high-school. In addition to his studio practice Barkley is the head scenic artist for Centaur Theatre in Montreal.

Daniel Barkley exhibits throughout Canada, United States and internationally. Barkley's painting has been part of a number of invitational figurative/representational themed exhibitions at prominent galleries in New York and San Francisco.

Meet the artist at our opening reception on Thursday September 8, from 5 - 8 pm.
