The Alberta Biennial Celebrates Alex Janvier August 31 to January 5, 2007
Curated by Donna Wawzonek
In collaboration with the Art Gallery of Alberta and the Walter Phillips Gallery at the Banff Centre, the Art Gallery of Calgary is pleased to present The Alberta Biennial Celebrates Alex Janvier. Janvier's signature style of curvilinear, gestural painting strokes, abstract imagery and biting political commentary are traced throughout his career in this exhibition.
As well, the exhibition introduces his latest series of painting inspired by his access to the Primrose Lake Air Weapons Range and his witness of the devastation of its landscape.
The political content of Janvier's work is well suited the themes of utopia and disaster of this year's Alberta Biennial. His approach to political concerns has ranged from anger to cynicism to humour over the years and now, with his new work confronting the decimation of traditional hunting and fishing land.
RED EYE First Nations Short Film and Video August 31 to January 5, 2007
Curated by Ryan Rice, Aboriginal Curator in Residence
Organized and circulated by Carleton University Art Gallery, On View in the AGC Media Gallery
RED EYE features an eclectic range of First Nations artists and emerging filmmakers who approach the ever-evolving forms of film and video as an extension to their established body of artwork or as a vehicle for experimenting with narrative storytelling.
The artists manipulate and defy conventional film genres like sci-fi, horror, and comedy to address social, cultural and political themes. At the same time, each short explores, challenges, and breaks away from stagnant cardboard depictions of Hollywood-style "Indians" that still appear in mainstream film.
Gallery Hours: Tuesday to Saturday 10 am to 5 pm; open until 9 pm the first Thursday of every month. Artwalk weekend; Saturday 10 am to 5 pm; Sunday 12 pm to 4 pm

Artists of the World
514 - 11 Avenue SW
Calgary AB T2R 0C8
Women in Motion - Artwalk Exhibit Featuring Alberta Women Artists
Lois Bauman, Painter - "In my paintings I hope to bring a little bit of the outdoors to people who do not have the chance to walk in the country. I hope they will 'step' into my paintings and find a bright, cheerful place."
Betty Stobo, Painter - "It was natural for me to be drawn to architectural portraits. Inspired by architects Antonio Gaudi and Frank Gehry, I try to capture the spirit of the street or structure."
Rea Harfield, Jewellery Maker - "My eyes have always been drawn to the abstract, the uncrowded, and the asymmetrical. Hollow beads are airy, and each one is unique because molten glass can change form, color and texture as it is turned in the flame.
Sitting at the torch, I become inspired by the fluidity and translucency of the glass and anticipate the unsculptured result when metals are added to the bead."
Lois & Betty will be painting in the gallery on Artwalk weekend. Live demonstration of jewellery making by Rea on Sunday.
Gallery Hours: Tuesday to Friday 10 am to 6 pm; Saturday 10 am to 5 pm; Sunday 11 am to 5 pm.

uncertainty; known and unknown; usual & strange; life and death. In a state of abandonment and receptiveness, I try to let myself be carried
by the act of painting, without suppressing anything I plan to create that will represent the most of my being, my body, my spirit and my
soul."
Paul Elia (Toronto, Canada) "What are the elements of my style? I enjoy mixing glass and metal, particularly aluminum and bronze. I
have fun fooling the eye. I look to create curiosity."
