ARTWALK 2011 LAUNCHES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY

September 7, 2011 - Calgary's popular Artwalk Festival kicks off this year with a special unveiling of a new Reinhard Skoracki sculpture at the entrance to the new EEEL building on Friday, September 16, 2011 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at 750 Campus Drive N.W. (off 32 Avenue NW). The public is invited to attend the reception and unveiling which marks the opening of the annual two-day celebration of arts in Calgary. The artist will be in attendance.

Reinhard Skoracki is an internationally renowned artist whose work illustrates the essence of what it means to be human. This impressive piece entitled "Nature is an Eternal Mystery" has been created specifically for the new Energy, Environment and Experiential (EEEL) building. An exhibition of Skoracki's work will be on view at the Herringer Kiss Gallery on 11th Avenue during Artwalk.

The University of Calgary has an impressive collection of public art by local and international artists. Visitors are invited to view other major new works in the EEEL building during the reception. A 20 foot wide David Burdeny photograph "North/South" is located in a lightbox at the top of the main staircase. Marjan Eggermont's silver leaf tree rises over 60 ft high on the elevator shaft, and two colourful paintings by Toronto abstract painter Angela Leach are also featured.

A self-guided printed walking tour will be available to allow visitors to browse the campus for works by Katie Ohe, Ray Arnett, Micah Lexier, and such landmarks such as the "Prairie Chicken" and the Olympic Arch.

The EEEL building is located at the intersection of 32 Ave NW and Campus Drive NW, two intersections west of Crowchild Trail. The building is readily identified by the textured aluminum exterior with large windows, highlighted by tall green shutters. The new sculpture is located at the southwest corner of the building.

Adjacent parking is available in Lots 21 and 22, modest evening rates apply. Convenient C-Train access is available via the University or Brentwood Stations.
